Some simple, basic hygiene and lifestyle changes can prevent the physical and social discomfort that can result from having a yeast infection. This is why it's important to do what you can to prevent yeast infections. It is better to never have an infection at all than to have to treat one. Experts in the field recommend some steps to take to prevent yeast from growing out of control in our bodies. You can make some changes to your diet and lifestyle and greatly reduce your chances of developing a yeast infection. 1.) Maintain good hygiene. Yeast favors moist areas, the more time you spend damp, the higher the chance of an infection. You should try to keep the vaginal area dry; dry off thoroughly after showering, swimming or working out. Change out of wet clothing as soon as possible to prevent giving yeast the chance to grow. 2.) Dressing manner While we're on the topic of clothes, you can keep your odds of an infection lower by wearing light, loose clothing. Tight clothing promotes the growth of yeast in the vaginal area; especially if these are made of air-trapping synthetic materials. It's better to opt for cotton clothing, especially where undergarments are concerned. Pantyhose and tights should be avoided when possible, unless you make a habit of wearing cotton underwear underneath them. 3.) Hygiene and Diet You need to maintain good overall health and hygiene as well. Whether or not you are prone to yeast infections, this is good advice. Be aware that scented tissues and feminine hygiene products can actually promote the growth of Candida and other microorganisms by irritating the vagina. Avoid petroleum-based lubricants during sex; these do not allow the skin to breathe, creating an ideal environment for Candida. Use water-based lubricants instead. Your diet also matters here, sugary foods also help yeast to grow, so avoid these foods when possible. With high levels of sugar in the body, yeast tends to grow faster. Instead of sugary foods like ice cream, have plain yogurt. Yogurt has "good" bacteria which help keep Candida in check. A cup of plain yogurt daily helps to curtail the growth of yeast. As with any other condition, prevention is the best medicine for a yeast infection. If women adopt lifestyles which are hostile to the growth of Candida, they will experience few, if any yeast infections and the discomfort which come with them. Small steps can yield big results when it comes to preventing yeast infections.
