It's often said in life that timing is everything. It is certainly that way when it comes to gaining muscle through weight training. I'm not just talking about how often you lift and what exercises you do, but also what you eat and when. You probably know that eating protein is a really good idea if you want to build fast muscle. Protein is made of the building blocks of muscles, so if you have a good supply of protein in your body, you'll be able to recover from your workouts more quickly and thus build muscle faster as well. But there are optimum times for eating protein if you're looking to build muscle fast. Research suggests that eating protein before working out is just as important as eating protein after working out. It makes a lot of sense that you'd want to fuel up on the stuff that will help repair and build your muscles after you've worked them, but eating protein before a workout also helps fuel your exertion and can even lead to more gains in lean mass than in people who just consume protein after a workout. One of the best ways to keep the muscle-building fires burning is to eat small meals throughout the day and to have some lean protein at each of them, whether that's in the form of a shake or a steak. Six meals are usually considered the ideal, both for people who are trying to lose weight and for those who want to gain muscle. But before you go crazy on an all-protein diet, you should know that carbohydrates are your friends, too. In this case you need carbs to stimulate insulin, usually considered a bad thing, but a necessary part of building muscle. While there are tons of supplements and muscle builders on the market these days, most people simply don't work out hard enough or long enough to need them. Instead, get your protein through real food whenever possible and save the money you would have spent on supplements to buy more weights or another great piece of exercise equipment that will keep you to your goals a lot more effectively than something you swallow. Muscle building is a process, but it's all about consistency. Not only do you need to work out consistently (and work all your different muscle groups consistently), but you also need to feed and fuel your muscles consistently with the food and nutrients that they need most.
